Andreas Thameyer’s Last Letter (1913)

[concerns about exhibitions and relationships between performers and white German women]… In this satirical short story, Arthur Schnitzler parodies a cuckold who insists that his child has dark skin not because his wife had a relationship with a black performer but because her fear when confronted with his racial otherness in an exhibition imprinted itself on the child in her womb. Recognizing that the public will not accept his “scientific” explanation, he resigns himself to suicide.
