Maishe Maponya and Bahamutsi Drama Group tour West Germany (1982 – 1983)

The South African playwright and director Maishe Maponya was born in Johannesburg in 1951. Among his early works are The Cry (1976) and Peace and Forgive (1978), followed by The Hungry Earth (1979) and Umongikazi – The Nurse (1983). He became one of the most important international voices of South African theater. In the early 1980s Mapaya toured West Germany together with the Bahamutsi Drama Group. They performed in Hamburg, Mainz, Oberhausen, Tübingen, Ludwigshafen, Düren, Erlangen and other cities. The tour was primarily organized by the Africa Working Group (Arbeitskries Afrika, AKAFRIK) in Münster. Mapaya’s play, The Hungry Earth stood as a protest against the South African apartheid regime.
